Tuesday evenings at 7:30pm from Nov.26th to Dec.17th

Advent is a time to prepare our hearts and minds for Christmas. The world around us gets swept up in all the secular preparations of festive preparation – all of which can be lots of fun!  But Advent (and Christmas) have much deeper spiritual roots than just celebration. So, this year, we are offering an Advent discussion group on that great Christmas season classic “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. Most of us are familiar with the story from the many movies that have been made of it (although I think the one starring Alastair Sim is THE version). But the book itself is rooted in Christian faith and full of imagery and teachings on redemption and living as a Christian that are sometimes lost in the movie versions. A Christmas Carol is a very short book (a novella rather than a novel) and is naturally divided into four short ‘chapters’ (called Staves by Dickens). Each week, we will read one stave and gather for simple worship and a discussion of the themes and images from the book and how they relate to our own lives and the world today. This is a study group suitable for everyone, from teenagers to seniors! We will have copies of A Christmas Carol available for borrowing or buying ($4 each). We will meet four Tuesday evenings at 7:30pm from November 26th to Dec 17th. Please let Roberta know if you are interested in participating and whether or not you would like a copy of the book.  (Roberta@stmaryskerrisdale.ca)
